region of the United States. It has spawned its own culture and
cuisine. Most of the music that can be attritbuted to as
American had its roots in the South: jazz, blues, gospel, and
rock and roll.
The influence of the French and Spanish, its
distinct architecture, and its cuisine sets it apart from the
rest of the country.

landscape from mountains to fertile valleys and farms.
Climatic changes vary within the region.
The traditional definition of the southern
states are those that seceded from the Union to form the
Confederacy. Some southern states such as Virginia, Maryland,
and West Virginia are also characterized as Mid-Atlantic
because of their political and economical access to the U. S.
capital.
