Portsmouth, New Hampshire

John Paul Jones founded the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1800. The shipyard is actually across the baay in Kittery, Maine. Most of the buildings in the city date from the 18th century and have been preserved. A number of the houses have been converted to museums. The city is a popular tourist destination in the summer.

The main restaurant area is Market Street. You will find a number of eating establishments offering a variety of different foods such as The Muddy River Smokehouse, which offers a variety of dishes. The Portsmouth Brewery offers live jazz and good bar food.

What to see:

Strawbery Banke Museum: The museum is made up of buildings and gardens that have been restored and employees wear period costumes.

The Music Hall: A 125-year-old theater which features movies, concerts, and plays during the summer.
