Portland, Maine

Portland is the largest city in Maine having been founded in 1632. It is also the largest port in Maine.

The city has several historic parks and a network of walking and hiking trails throughout the city. The main attractions of the city are located in the Old Port District and the Downtown Arts District. Located in the Downtown Arts District are the Portland Museum of Art, Maine College of Art, and other galleries and museums.

There are a number of activities to pursue on your visit to Portland. When not visiting the beaches you will be able to take advantage of the golf and tennis facilities.

You can take a ferry ride to offshore islands such as Long Island and Peaks Island. On Mondays during the summer there is a reggae concert at Jones Landing on Peaks Island.

There is also a day trip to the Portland Head Light House in Fort Williams Park.

The restaurants of Portland are well-known for thier value and quality. You will find a number of restaurants featuring local seafood specialties and international cuisine such as Japanese, South American, Caribbean, and Indian. The "Italian" sandwich was created here.

What to see:

The Portland Museum of Art: Collection of 19th century American art including a collection of Winslow Homer paintings.

The Wadsworth-Longfellow House: The restored home the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Portland has a number of microbreweries in town. The Shipyard Brewing Company features tours of its premises. Nightlife is found at the various pubs and beer halls in the city.
