Exploring the United States

Depending on the source, the United States is the third or fourth largest country in the world. The continental United States is made up of forty-eight states and its capital, Washington, D. C. The state of Alaska is in the northwest bordered by Canada and Russia in the the Bering Straits. The state of Hawaii is a group of islands in the Pacific. The United States also has jurisdiction over several territories in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

For purposes of exploring the United States, we have separated the states into geographical regions.

New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Mid-Atlantic: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.

South: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Exploring the United StatesSouth Carolina, and Tennessee.

Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Southwest: Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah.

Rockies: Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.

Pacific: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington.

Each region and each state has its own unique characteristics. Many people opt to visit large cities such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, D. C. However, there are traditions, festivals, and museums and other areas to be explored in all the states.

You can find an area to pursue your various interests from winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding to summer activities such as sunbathing, swimming, and surfing. There are numerous parks and forests with hiking trails, and compsites. There are rivers for fishing and kayaking.

There are museums in each state which portray its history. There are family fun places such as Disneyland and Disney World. There is celebrity and glamour in Hollywood and excitement and entertainment in Las Vegas.

From its rolling hills, fertile valleys, deserts, and beaches, you can find a reason to explore the United States.
