Known as the "insurance capital of the world," Hartford is the capital of
Connecticut. It is situated on the Connecticut River.
The city has a number of parks and the oldest city rose garden in the country in Elizabeth Park.
Its neighborhoods are diverse. The central business district in the downtown area.
Hartford is a scholarly city. There are over twenty-five universities or institutions of learning
clustered in the Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts area. Among these are Trinity College, the Hartford
Conservatory, and the Hartford Seminary.
There are a number of historical buildings and museums in the city. The city is also going through
a period of rejuvenation with modern buildings such as the Connecticut Convention Center.
Places to see:
The Mark Twain House and Museum: Home of Samuel Clements, author of The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.
The Harriet Beecher Stowe House: The house is adjacent to the home of Mark Twain
and it reflects her life and times.
Wadsworth Atheneum: This the nation's oldest public art museum. Collections
include German and French porcelain and paintings by the Old Masters and the Impressionists. There is an impressive
collection Hudson River School Landscapes.
Where to stay:
Residence Inn by Marriott: This downtown hotel is close to the business district
and shopping. The rooms are cozy and there is a wheelchair accessible area. Many of the area's attractions are
close by.
The Goodwin Hotel: Located in the downtown area, the hotel is two blocks from the
Wadsworth Atheneum. The hotel was built in 1889. There is a restaurant on the premises.
Where to eat:
Angelo's on Main: Situated on the Rockledge Golf Course, the restaurant serves
lunch and dinner daily. There is a tavern that serves meals as well. The menu contains a variety of options to
choose from.
Spris Restaurant & Bar: Authentic Italian dishes with live jazz each week.
Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery: If you are looking for something differe, this is
the place to go. The food is prepared "Jamaican" style. It is a taste of the island in the northeast.
Black-Eyed Sally's BBQ & Blues: Want some southern home style cooking, this is
the place to go.
After Dinner:
Hartford is known for its theater, ballet, and symphony. The Hartford Stage
Company performs traditional American classics and contemporary plays.
At the Bushnell, you may find traveling Broadway shows, ballet, or symphoney
orchestra performances.
The weekends come alive in Hartford. You can find pubs, clubs, and entertainment on Asylum Street
and near the train station. A favorite spot is the City Steam Brewery and BrewHaHa Comedy
Club.
You can rent a car and venture out into neighboring suburbs and the countryside.
