Exploring Maine

Until 1820 Maine was a part of Massachusetts. The state has a rugged coastline and pine forests. Over ninety person of its land is forests. A lot of the land is unhabited.

Along the coast line are cities which welcome tourists in the summer. There are many summer residences along the beach and in the beach towns. There are also a number of fishing villages along the coast. Also, there are a lot of offshore islands.

Maine Biddeford City HallThe national park in New England is the Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor. The Appalachian Trail which extends to Springer Mountain Georgia starts at Mount Katabdin.

Maine has warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters.

Maine has organized government and unorganized territories. There are over 400 townships plus some coastal islands that are in the Unorganized Territory of Maine. Unorganized Terrority townships do not receive local government aid.

There are a number of colleges and universities int he state including Bangor Theological Seminary, Bowdoin College, the University of Maine, and the University of New England.
