Connecticut is one of the
original thirteen colonies that rebeled against English rule.
Although the first Europeans to settle in the region were
Dutch, it was an Englishman, Thomas Hooker, who helped to
establish the more permanent settlements in the Connecticut
Colony.
Hartford is the capital and many insurance
companies are headquartered here.
Connecticut is a center of scholarship with Yale University
and the first law school in the country. It is also a "bedroom"
community to NewYork City. Many of its residents work in the
city but live in Connecticut, avoiding the taxes of New
York.
The original charter of the New Haven and
Connecticut Coloneis became the foundation for the U. S.
Constitution. Connecticut's nickname is the "Constitution
State."
